Every cat and dog are entitled to love, food, shelter - a home. However, there are thousands of cats and dogs around the world who don't know what a home is. Many of these poor creatures have never had a warm place to sleep at night or felt a loving touch. Others did have a home, but were tossed out like trash. Some of them end up in humane societies or animal shelters. Others are simply thrown out on the street and left to fend for themselves. They end up being hit by cars, poisoned; sometimes even worse! Why should you adopt? Here's why:Every year in Canada, thousands of healthy cats and dogs in humane societies are euthanized. In fact, over 90% of animals dropped off must be destroyed because homes cannot be found for them. The reason humane societies are overcrowded is simple - people! Why are people the cause of this problem? Read on.- People give pets as gifts (especially at Christmas) - the kids have begged for a pet all year long, and promised to care for the animal. Once the novelty has worn off, the kids forget about their promise to look after the pet, and leave mom and dad to care for it. The parents either don't have the time or can't be bothered, and the pet is either tossed out onto the street to fend for itself, taken out into the country and dumped, or taken to the local humane society. The problem here is, that in our society, pets are treated as property, not as members of the family as they should be. - People don't seem to realize the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. For some strange reason, people seem to think that Adopting a pet is a commitment. You are commiting yourself to care for your pet for the rest of its life, NOT until the novelty wears off. That is why it is VERY important you choose the right pet for your family. You must take into consideration, not only the type of pet, but also how much time you are willing to put into your new pet. You have to realize that caring for a pet is more than simply providing it with food, water and shelter. Pets require grooming and exercise; some more than others.Realize too they sometimes get sick, just as we do, and need medical attention, which can be costly at times. Before you go out and adopt a pet, do your research! Make sure you can afford the expense of your chosen pet. After you've decided on the "right" pet for you, visit your local humane society or animal shelter. You will be possibly saving the life of animal that otherwise might be euthanized.Probably THE most important thing to remember when adopting a pet, do not add to animal over-population - have your pet spayed or neutered.
