Spooky

1988 -1998

Spooky is a sweet and gentle long haired tortoiseshell. She was living in the woods on the property when we first moved in. She, her sister and eight other cats had been left by the previous owners. They told us that she was wild and was deathly afraid of men. As there had been five very large, rambunctious teenage boys living in the house, it wasn't hard to figure out where that fear had come from!

Over the first few weeks we tried to gain her confidence. However, she was as elusive as a spirit on the wind and we would catch only occasional glimpses of her. Eventually, she came closer. she would sit in the safety of the woods and observe us with all the other cats. She must have liked what she saw because she eventually plucked up the courage to allow us to approach her! Once we were able to touch her, she let down her defenses and turned into the most loving, affectionate cat you could imagine. Unfortunately, even at nine years old, Spooky remains suspicious of strangers. She keeps her distance from them as much as possible. Whenever anyone comes, she melts into the woods like the gentle ghost that she is! People wonder if she's real or just a wonderful figment of our imagination!
