This practice, known as pound release or pound seizure, is mandated under Ontario's Animals for Research Act. After only 72 hours, cats and dogs who end up in pounds, unredeemed by their human families, may be legally sold to registered research facilities. Dogs are sold for $6 and cats for $2.
